PFOA-Free microwave popcorn bag honored for Environmental and Sustainability achievement.
Spartanburg, SC – March 18, 2010: The first ever microwave popcorn bag able to claim that it is PFOA- free took top honors in the Environmental and Sustainability category of the 2010 Flexible Packaging Association Achievement Awards.
Exopack, a leader in the manufacture of paper and plastic flexible packaging and engineered coatings, was presented with an FPA Gold Award for Environmental and Sustainability Achievement for this package during ceremonies held on March 10, 2010, in Orlando, Florida.
“It is truly an honor to have one of our products recognized for its innovative use of the latest materials and technologies to remove concerns about risks to the environment,” said Bob Arvanites, Senior Vice-President & General Manger of Exopack’s Pet Food & Specialty business.
PFOA, also referred to as C8, is a man-made chemical compound used in the manufacture of grease-resistant coatings for paper and many other widely used products. It is pervasive in the environment and has attracted the attention of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the possible risks of long-term exposure to this chemical.
Exopack’s PFOA-Free popcorn bag utilizes FDA-approved grease resistant coatings manufactured by Solvay-Solexis with a process that does not introduce C8 chains. This eliminates the potential for PFOA addition into the package and does not add to the accumulation of PFOA in the environment.
